Trailer Talk - Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

Here it is!  The much anticipated first teaser for Star Trek Into Darkness!  As is typical of a J.J. Abrams project, information about this film has been pretty hard to come by.  It shouldn't be any surprise that this teaser does its fair share of teasing.  Whetting our appetites, without giving away too much of the plot.  We're shown bits of a film that looks more bleak than its predecessor (Abrams' franchise reboot from 2009).  We see plenty of action (including the Enterprise crash landing?).  We see the new incarnations of the Enterprise's crew all returning.  We see Benedict Cumberbatch's villain for a fleeting moment.  Is he Khan?  Is he not?  Who cares!  Either way he'll probably be an excellent antagonist for Kirk (Chris Pine) and company.  As far as I'm concerned, it'll just be an added bonus if he does turn out to be Khan.

I grew up watching re-runs of the original Star Trek series and the movies that spun out of it.  I wouldn't consider myself a Trekkie, but I was really pleased with the reboot from three and a half years ago.  They got the feel of the character's, their personalities, and their universe right.  Into Darkness looks to be the natural next step as they've gotten past the initial origin story and look to expand things.  After seeing this first teaser, I'm willing to bet that Into Darkness will be up towards the top of my Most Anticipated Films of 2013 list at the beginning of the year.  Who else is counting down to May 17, 2013?

There were actually two teaser trailers released.  One is the standard U.S. version of the trailer and the other is a slightly longer Japanese version (both of which can be seen below).  I posted the Japanese version first because it has the extra bit of footage, and the U.S. version after because it doesn't have the distracting subtitles.

  1. I'm not at all a Trekkie either, but enjoyed the first reboot film. Tucker really liked it, and to him, Zachary Quinto is the "real Spock". If you show him a pic of Leonard Nimoy, he says, "Oh, it's the guy that played Spock when he was old". :)

Anyway, my reaction when I saw this trailer a couple days ago was simply, "OMG! Is that Benedict Cumberbatch?" That alone is a reason to see the movie.
