Review - Unbroken

Unbroken (2014), PG-13, 137 minutes - Unbroken is one of a slew of biopics that hit theaters this winter. Directed by Angelina Jolie and starring Jack O'Connell, it tells the story of Olympian Louis Zamperini and his fight for survival after a plane crash led to his incarceration in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in World War II. Zamperini (O'Connell) started out as a mischievous youngster, running around doing pretty much whatever he wanted but at the same time not fitting in with the other kids because of his poor English. As he reached high school, his older brother Pete pushed him to join the track team and instilled Louis with strict discipline during their training runs. The work ethic and discipline paid off as Louis made the U.S. Olympic team and competed in the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany. He would finish eighth in the 5000 meter event, but set a world record with a 56 second final lap. Zamperini enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1941 and became...

Review - Inside Llewyn Davis

Inside Llewyn Davis (2013), R, 104 minutes - Over the years, the Coen brothers (Joel and Ethan) have carved out their own little corner of the film making world.  One in which they show us glimpses of lives that could be our own and as is often the case in life, can be viewed with a certain sense of humor, albeit oftentimes a dark one.  Inside Llewyn Davis is their latest work, providing a look at a few days in the life of a struggling folk singer in 1961. Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is the surviving half of a folk duo.  His partner committed suicide and he is now trying to make a career as a solo act.  He struggles between gigs, bouncing from one friend's couch to another, refusing to try anything else because he says that music is his career.  The problem being but he rarely shows the passion for it that he claims to have.  He's a defeatist who lets his frustration build up and lash out at those who do support him.  That probably doesn't really s...

Review - Tron: Legacy

Tron: Legacy (2010), PG, 127 minutes - For the few people who don't know, Tron: Legacy is the sequel to Disney's cult classic about a programmer who gets stuck inside the computer system he is working on. I say 'cult classic' and not 'classic' because I re-watched the original Tron a couple months back and it doesn't really hold up at all. It looks cool considering the time at which it was made (1982), but that's about it. Anyway, this isn't about the original, it's about the sequel, which I feel is a better overall movie. It takes Tron's basic concept and builds upon it, taking place 20 years after the original. Garrett Hedlund plays Sam Flynn, the son of Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges, retaining his role from Tron). After investigating a page that came from his father's old office, he is transported into The Grid, the same computer program world that his father has been trapped in for 20 years. He learns that his father not only dis...
