Going to the Chapel [2019] #2 - (W) David Pepose, (A) Gavin Guidry, (C) Liz Kramer, (L) Ariana Maher, (CA) Sweeney Boo, Maan House, and Gavin Guidry
The second chapter of Going to the Chapel hits LCS shelves everywhere this Wednesday (10/23) and it's an installment that you'll definitely want to pick up if you read last month's
premiere issue as it doles out important back story and advances the current plot in ways that present some interesting new wrinkles to this not-so-typical heist tale from David Pepose and Gavin Guidry.
For those who didn't read the first issue, allow me to bring you up to speed: Socialite Emily Anderson's wedding to local architect Jesse Moore is interrupted when the notorious Bad Elvis Gang shows up looking to steal the $250 million Dresden sapphire necklace that Emily is wearing (on loan to her father from Paris). As it turns out, Emily has a bit of a past with Tom, leader of the Bad Elvis Gang, which turns this heist into a bit more than a smash and grab.
Pepose, Guidry, and company do some interesting things as the situation escalates from a robbery to a willing hostage situation (with Emily following Tom's lead in an effort to keep everyone safe) to one with a very serious threat of violence. Issue one included a creative way through which the authorities were alerted, and there's an equally unique way that further communication with the cops is presented in this issue. At first it seems a bit over the top, but the crazy thing is that it makes perfect sense in this day and age of social influencers. Things then fall apart just as quickly for those being held hostage thanks to the very same societal 'priorities' that appeared to be their saving grace.
There are so many questions after two issues. Just how involved is Emily? Or does she even know at this point? Was she acting as a willing hostage in an attempt to de-escalate the situation or because she's trying to run away with Tom? The stakes have been raised in Going to the Chapel #2 and I am definitely on the hook to see how the story progresses from here!
*Prior David Pepose work reading update: I have not yet started Spencer & Locke, but I am getting closer. Since my previous Going to the Chapel post, it was announced that there will be a Spencer & Locke 3. No further information at this point, but I suppose I better get a move on so that I don't fall even further behind!
